My husband, three sons and I are relocating to Virginia from New York in a couple of months and have been looking at some townhomes for rent in Ashland or Richmond. His job will be in Rockville and we were told that some areas of Richmond may be high in crime and such, which is what we're trying to avoid since we already live in a high crime area of Brooklyn, NY and are looking to live in a more suburban like area. Then we've been hearing things like hicks, rednecks and racism whenever we mention the town of Ashland but I also hear that it's a nice place to raise a family, which is what we're looking for but since we are an interracial couple, African American & Puerto Rican, we want to avoid places that will be undesirable to live in for minorities.(too much racism, excessive unfriendliness, etc.) Any info, suggestions or input on this matter would be appreciated

Rockville is west of Ashland over 2 lane country roads. Ashland is a small town and about as exciting, but people like it...

With your husbands job location look at the Short Pump Area of Henrico County. Great family area, diverse, great schools, low crime and every store you can think of within 10 minutes. You didn't mention the price range you wish to rent, with that I could better point you towards an area.

Welcome to Virginia....

Default Ashland VA

Ashland is a nice safe community North of Richmond by about 15 miles. About 20 minutes from Rockville. The above writer was correct in that the West End, Glen Allen areas, or Western Hanover are the areas closest to Rockville. I don't think you will see much prejudice from the area. Richmond's past would maybe make you think otherwise. It is actually a nice place to live. Lots to do - close to the beach, close to the Montains, lots of history, close to DC. Here is a view of Ashland from the middle of Town:
VisualTour

Ashland has an AMTRAK stop and three major food stores (Food Lion, Wal-Mart, Martins). A nice cultural scene with outdoor concerts and a couple of music venues. Call or Email me if I can assist you in finding a place to live.

We've looked at some rentals in the west end area, but the rental prices for 3bdrms were a little above what we can afford right now, so we've opted to move into a 3bdrm town home rental in Ashland, it's affordable and really nice. We'll be moving there in two weeks. Thank you guys for the info...can't wait to be a Virginian
