I would appreciate any suggestions anyone might have.
My husband and I are researching moving to considering to Virginia from S. California.
Although we love the beauty and climate of So. Cal we are looking to move to a more fiscally and socially conservative community.

We have a small toner recycling company.
We would need to be close to a city, with businesses that print in large numbers. It is a service company and not sales based.
How are taxes for business in Virginia?

Is it possible to find a house in a safe community for 100K-130K, with at least 1000 sq. feet.? We would love to find a community with other like minded people. We are fairly conservative Christians.

Since we homeschool, we are not concerned about the "rating" of school districts. We would like to find a "family friendly" community ie: parks, community events for kids, activities for the kids.
We are currently involved in a youth track club here and would love to be able to continue.

Does anyone know of any cities/towns with an active "homeschooling" community. Is anyone familiar with communities/groups out there?

Thanks so much!
ellabella

I live in Hollywood, CA and I am originally from a town just outside of Charlottesville.
You will not have trouble finding networks of people who homeschool their children. My entire evangelical family use homeschool, by a system which the children actually interact in a classroom setting via the internet. The kids have done amazing with this type of schooling. I have other family that use the church for school, which (imo) is not as good. Some family have used actual christian schools with established sport teams, programs, ect.(that has worked out well for them).

It is def more conservative than so_cal and religion or christian spirituality will not be hard to find. Have fun attending one of the million tent revivals that take place in warm months in the many surrounding , "smaller" towns.

Your housing budget will do you well! If you take the time to actually drive out of Charlottesville into the surrounding areas or west of Harrisonburg, you will find Appalachia poverty in extreme (as you would find in kentucky, trailer parks, shacks on rivers without running water, entire communities without teeth and unable to find jobs, ect). Therefor, 130G should give you a decent home somewhere within the area. If you are trying to find a home near the college, of course you will need to put in time to find such a good deal.

good luck!

AND I hope you are not looking for blue collar work there, that will only pay 8$/hr. My family are extremely hard workers and without college degrees they fight everyday for work, while fantasizing about a 10$ hour job that may give them health insurance or allow them to take a vacation to the next state.

EllaBella - Unless you are already sold on Virginia, you may want to consider Greenville, SC. Its a fairly large, very conservative, christian town and is very, very affordable (more so than Charlottesville). Its also very green and beautiful (and I don't mean to imply that Charlottesville isn't...)... There are several universities nearby and its business friendly. Lots of businessness, lots of law firms, etc.

LeeLee, I've never seen community-wide toothless conditions such as you describe in Kentucky, my native state.

Be careful with your stereotypes.

Sorry for the off-topic post, OP...good luck with your planned move to Virginia. It's a beautiful state, the home of many of my ancestors.

to the above post,

Then you need to drop your college degree or finanacial set-up off at the court house, while you climb on the back of a pick-up truck and take a very long trip through the holler of 4 appalachian states! I love the denial of transplant northerners OR proud Appalachian people in false reality while inheriting family farm money, but lets get real....
OR maybe you are just unaware, which is even more SAD, SAD, SAD!

BTW, "toothless" means dentures & polygrip these days, for the fortunate who have dental in these REAL mountain areas and do not know what REAL appalachian people mean by the term! Appalachian areas are beautiful, but there is a harsh reality that exists. Anyone who denies it sounds extremely ignorant or just cruel, so sorry for the lecture...
But it is very necessary in this case.

Ellabella, we are native Californians (who are also Christians) looking to move from here to VA also. We have been to VA several times over the past 6 years and have to come to love the state. We are looking to move between Richmond and Virginia Beach (love the Williamsburg area) because we work with the military and hope to be able to transfer in our jobs. Your business might do well closer to military installations.
