Does anyone here live in a home that has an Alternative Septic system? If so have you had any issues? I believe by VA law you're required to have a maintenance contract with this system if I read somewhere correctly. We are looking at a home in Edinburg with one of these systems.

I have not had experience but I recall the Shenstone development on Route 7 just west of Leesburg has those types. There was a bit of publicity about the problems. For instance, you couldn't run the dishwasher and washing machine at the same time.

We have one and have had no problems with it. Yes, you are right, several years ago Virginia put into place the requirement to have it checked yearly. Turned out for us to be a good thing as it was not long after we moved into our new house and we discovered the electric wasn't hooked up right and it hadn't been pumping! If you are buying one already in place, I would make sure there's an inspection, up to date, and also pumped put before closing. Inspect before pumping however as our neighbor just had theirs pumped and was told it couldn't be checked as it was now empty. Ahhh...... country living.....

I have a Puraflo septic system. I'm not sure of the details but here's a link to the VA department of Helath web site:
