I'm glad the golf course plan got scrapped but hopefully there is a way to use the power line right of way to create a new road to alleviate rt 1 traffic. The google maps view shows a direct route from the beltway/95 interchange to Adelphi rd, right by the entrance to university college. Is that even feasible?

What Adelphi said is correct - rt 1 needs to be safer -- significantly more pedestrian and bike friendly. How many more people need to be struck by a car on that stretch before things change (or as Dylan would put it "How many roads must a college kid walk across, before he is struck by a car, yes'n how many times can a car speed by while a kid is just tryin' to get to the bar, yes'n....")

And again it can not go both ways of opposing a new connector highway and not Support US Highway 1 Improvements(Adding an extra lane in both directions and removing the center reverse lane) and expect a healthy future economic/business growth for College Park. You can not inconvenience people who drivel and expect the University to continue with being attractive to future students and visitors if there is extremely limited road space and just simple transit that doesn't benefit the Mass Majority.....

Who is opposing a new connector road? College park will have a healthy economic future if it reduces crime, makes rt 1 safer and becomes a college town that is a more desirable place to live/visit. I support efforts to build a connector road that will alleviate rt 1 traffic - and by doing so, can enable the changes to rt 1 that are so needed. The street is currently not safe at all for bikers and pedestrians, yet it is the primary road in college park. How will adding an extra lane make it safer? How is what I am saying having it both ways?

Default Crane Avenue

Ever heard of Crane Avenue in Maryland? No? According to the new College Park Development Update, there will be a total of 5 projects along Baltimore Avenue from 410 to the Beltway. By the end of this year, cranes will fill the skyline from Riverdale Park to the Beltway! By the middle of next year, add two more sites that will be under construction. This is it people. College Park is picking backup from the building boom/bust of 2007 when tons of projects ground to a halt due to the recession. It just took about 7 longggggg years.

Breaking Ground This Year

1. Cafritz Property (Whole Foods) - Breaks ground this week. Completion: End of 2015.

2. College Park Place (Courtyard Marriott) - Breaks ground this spring. Completion: End of 2015.

3. Maryland Book Exchange - Under construction. Completion: Fall 2015.

4. Knox Village - Breaks ground at end of spring semester. Completion: Fall semester 2016.

5. TownePlace Suites (Marriott) - Breaks ground in a few months. Completion: 2015.

Quickly Entering The Pipeline

1. Monument Village - Amended Site Plan

2. Metropolitan - Approved Site Plan

Coming in 2017? (Replacing the Applebee's/FedEx block in College Park)

None yet. There's not even a conceptual site plan yet. Once they start moving through the approval process, we'll have a better idea. My best guess would be that they start construction by the end of this year at the earliest and finish within 2 years. East campus is technically in a TODZ and would fall within the new fast track approval process.

The Rt. 1 development won't just stop at Hyattsville either, there are a number of other projects in the works along Rt. 1 that extend all the way to the District Line through Brentwood and Mt. Rainier. Here is info on 1 of the new mixed use developments in the works for that area.

2nd Design Charrette:Former Northeastern Plumbing Supply Building - Business Updates - Hyattsville, MD Patch

Cool!

Thanks for sharing! Have you heard about this one? The Mt. Rainier Gateway project.

  • Neighborhood:Mt. Rainier, MD
  • Location:NE Rhode Island Av & NE Eastern Av Mount Rainier MD 20712
  • Project Size:20,000 sq. ft. retail, 210 apartments

Begins construction this summer and will be completed in 2016. That makes at least 4 -5 projects along Rt. 1 that will be complete in 2016!

^^^^ Nice! They really need something there on the corner of Eastern Ave. and Rt. 1 at the DC border like that to be more visually welcoming. In my opinion the Rt. 1 corridor through PG county is the most undervalued real estate market in the DC area but that is quickly changing.
