Every time they say an earthquake happened I miss it. They say people as far away as Florida or St. Louis or New York felt it, but I felt nothing in Gaithersburg. Weird. I was outside working on my car. My kids said they felt it inside though. It's weird because if they can feel it in those far away places then why couldn't I?

As did I. Still, that wa a big tremor and it rarely happens here. Not a surprise that some folks were a bit a scared.

Well, the thing to keep in mind is that if you were in DC on 9/11, something like yesterday's earthquake could bring back some really frightening/painful memories. I'm willing to give people a pass yesterday if the earthquake freaked them out a bit.

hahahahahhaha I think I saw that. It was some article on the WaPo mobile site and the snippet said something about 9/11. I rolled my eyes and closed the page, I couldn't take any more melodrama.

Actually, the cell phones not working did remind me of 9/11. And I was here in high school when that happened. So yeah...it did bring back some memories.
Eh, maybe for a split second as I wondered what the hell was going on, but otherwise I was a bit nonplussed. I got annoyed by the cell phone service failure though, if there's ever a real emergency in DC we're screwed.
When I realized it was an earthquake (and not my heart suddenly pounding or a ghost jumping around the room) I thought it was either another small local quake or it was a really big one some distance away. I think the New Madrid Fault quake is going to happen some time in the next 10 or 20 years or so, maybe sooner. I was glad it was relatively minor.
But yeah, many people did over react. We had a bridge get closed beacuse they were worried about it having a crack in it but its been in bad shape for years anyway. I was embarassed for Philadelphia that they panicked like they did but also proud that once again Mayor Nutter stood up to the city's people and told them to act like adults.
We had one casualty on the home front. I opened a basement cupboard to get a can of soup for lunch and an empty canning jar fell out and smashed.
I hope the DC monuments check out okay and Virginia repairs its local damage. It looks like they'll get a break from the hurricane, its going straight for Obama.
