Dear Hurricane Irene, I knew Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Katrina came through the hometown of mine, and you frankly my dear, are no Hurricane Katrina.
yep. I bought some supplies for my mom and sis cos I'm a bit of an irrational worrier (they live in a freakin' high-rise apartment building on a high floor) but I'm probably not getting much for myself.
The storm is already weakening, I'm not sure if it's gonna strengthen again. Right now all the models make it sound like a sustained strong thunderstorm at best for most of the DC area. It's a lot worse for the coast though, especially since we don't get hurricanes often and so a lot of houses probably aren't built for them. No high stilts, no storm shutters, no HurriQuake nails.
Well, I'm not getting anything. DC proper looks like we may get a half inch of rain, at worse 2 inches of rain, and we've been through that before big deal. I think this is a non-event for the DC area itself, but because it is DC, we're all going to panic.

I agree. I'm actually from the region that should be worried (SE Virginia) and I think they are more level headed when preparing for hurricanes mainly due to experience.
Can the basement garage in my apt building be flooded? Should I park my car on the street? Sorry if a stupid question.
No! I say you should keep it right where you have it. Its not going to rain enough to flood your car. Down trees and debris are going to be the biggest problems and your car will be exposed to both rain and wind if left on the street. You're luckier than me. My car will be right on the street getting the business.
