Here in Palm Coast area I know the monthly cost of gas if I work i Orlando will be about 300 dollars, plus wear and tear on the car(1.5 hrs each way) But if i live in, say Laurel or Ellicott City and must commute to DC every day, what would be the cost ov the cheapest way to get there. the average DCer can probably make a quick calculation in your head between trains, buses, driving and parking, the Metro, etc. what if i drove in? its hard to compare.
Can u give some general numbers?
Thanks in advance!
The DC Metro homepage has trip planner that can calculate the cost from a given address based on the time, location, etc.
I'm new to the area but I have been sternly cautioned against driving in based on traffic gridlock. Plus parking downtown is expensive.
If you can walk to a Metro station, that can save you over $100/month based on gas and parking fees. Commuter buses would also cut that in half I suppose (never used them personally)
The Metro itself isn't cheap. Trips from the outer suburbs can run $10/day ($200/month) just for the train rides alone if you travel during the "peak" periods which is when most people go to/leave work.
It's something you have to factor in based on quality of life and what you want. A place to live may be $300 cheaper in one place but then you have to think of the time and expense of commuting. I think some people (myself included) relocate to DC and say, "I'm not going to pay that much to live in Place A" and then they wind up in Place B and realize they have added and extra $10 and an hour of misery to their day just to manage the commute to work. That might be ideal if you have kids, but a young single person...not so much.
Commuting is REALLY bad here. When the federal spending bubble burts..and it will...there is going to be a giant vacuuming sound of people fleeing this nightmare.
