I will be in DC for a one year stint working in the building connected to Union Station starting this August. So, I am interested in any feedback on the area. I'm looking into a place near 200 K street NW and would like to walk to Union Station for work. How safe is that?
Thanks for your feedback on this!

I know this area very well with my fire house being nearby. It definitely isn't a "bad" area and it's within walking distance of plenty of great places. Like stateofnature said in his/her other post, Sursum Corda is right up the street and it's definitely very sketchy north of there between New Jersey and North Capitol. However I don't really see any reason why you'd be going in that direction. The biggest nuisance will be the prostitutes. They walk around K and L St NW with a large portion of them between North Capitol and 5th St. The majority of them in that area are transexuals. I've seen them numerous times in front of that building. So it's not the perfect living situation but the location itself isn't terrible. I can't remember much about the inside of the building since it's been awhile since I've been inside there.
Thank you both for your replies. I have visited there (as suggested by stateofnature) when I applied to the complex. I had a similar type of impression. It is in a location that is fairly nice in one direction and fairly not in another. My concern is that I'd be walking to and from work closer to the "fairly not" section. I did see a mention of the prostitutes in a website rating the apartments.
I'm also considering a place on the first block of E Street NW - which would be even closer to Union Station. Thoughts there?
I'm surprised there are apartments there too. It's mostly office buildings and Georgetown Law buildings. Not very residential at all. It's perfectly safe area but seems like a pretty boring and dead place to live. I don't even know where you would go for basic amenities like groceries.
No, it's not your bad, you were right. 35 E St is basically 1st and E NW. Everything I said before applies. It's a great location in terms of proximity to downtown, the metro, etc, but it's not at all a residential neighborhood. It's a business area and you won't have many basic amenities at all within walking distance.
I know someone living there and they like the area. Its not 'perfect' but definitely a good value since you work there. There are also a couple of bars up the street in every direction but most of the really popping neighborhoods will have to be attended via metro/cab if you come back late at night. Like I mentioned, it's not perfect, but good if you don't have 2000 to spend on a one bedroom.
