D.C. streetcar is back, and other highlights from Mayor Bowser's first State of the District address - Washington Business Journal
Quote:
Mayor Muriel Bowser, in her first State of the District address, pledged Tuesday not only to get the initial 2.2-mile line along Benning Road and H Street NE finally up and running, but to extend the line to "downtown Ward 7" east of the Anacostia and then to the Potomac River, to connect underserved D.C. residents with Union Station and Georgetown.
Thank god. They need to just build out this one line and then evaluate whether or not they want to expand.

Yup. I think they need to immediately start the extension. after it is complete do a one year study on ridership, & then figure out whether the whole system should be implemented. With the extended line though they have already talked about having a majority of the extension be in dedicated lanes, so DDOT seems to understand the mistakes they made the first time around

We don't need an H Street Benning Road streetcar, that's what the X2 bus route is for, which goes from Minnesota Avenue metro station straight down the H street corridor to Lafayette Square NW. The streetcar jas already been testing for nine months going up and down H street NE. I say put passengers pn it and see how it goes before investing even more millions of dollars onto expanding something thats in order and hasnt even been used yet.

Absolutely disgusting!
Hey...not a problem...it's only taxpayer money...say the bureaucrats.

You can't objectively evaluate it's usefulness without building out the whole way from Georgetown to Minnesota Avenue and seeing ridership. That's about 2 miles further than the current X2 goes and would add a desperately needed transit option in Gtown.

You clearly don't understand how transit works. You can't conduct an analysis of it until it's complete. That means the whole line from Benning Road metro station to Georgetown.

Wait a minute. So yall just want to throw another xx million dolkats at a streetcar to do routes that metro already is on with the X2 and 30 buses? Its a simple ride from the x2 to the circulator on Mass Ave to get to Georgetown from EOTR NE. I dont think its sensible building a line, then not using it until you expand it. Thats like saying the metrorail shouldnt have been used until allll the expansions were completed. What a waste this streetcar is and completely unnecessary.

No I dont understand transit, but I do know the current routes and how to get around, and that this streetcar is useless going up and down H street for nearly a year and not one passenger, yet you already want to spend another xx million on it when we have a severe homelessness problem.

Not desperately needed whatsoever. The 30 buses connect southeast to Georgetown, and the X2 transfer to the Union Station-Georgetown circulator connects Minn/Benning to Georgetown. Ive never heard anyone south and east of the river complain about not being able to get to Georgetown by bus.

How about making the 30 and 90/92 buses bigger like the X2. And if connecting were a problem, we didnt need streetcars to resolve that.

but you can certainly create an estimate by studying current ridership patterns.....

Let's be honest. Most people who are going to/from Georgetown don't want to get on a bus. It may be illogical but it's a fact of life. Also, streetcars are much easier for tourists to understand than a bus. This is just as much about connecting Georgetown to the rest of downtown and Metro stations as anything. Doubt I will see a Metro station in Georgetown in my lifetime.
