Yeah, I've fallen asleep on the Metro before. Only once did I overshoot my stop - needed to switch from Blue to Orange at Stadium Armory; woke up to the driver announcing 'Addison Road' and knew that wasn't right.
I recall one time when me & some fellow passengers were trying to wake some poor guy who was in a coma-like sleep at New Carrollton. We gave up and notified the driver instead.
On the Metro? All I can think of earthquakes, or rear end collisions, or certain roads in Virginia.
Well that would work too, in terms of making you fall deep in sleep. You can think about earthquake happening in a location that's not exactly where you are. You can think about rear end collisions of a train that's right behind you. If you're weird like that, it's okay, whatever float your boat to make you fall asleep.
Sleeping on the train is an art I learned on the VRE when I used to commute on that. There's a bend in the tracks between Clifton and Manassas that woke me up without fail every time so I didn't really have to worry about missing my stop. And my destination was the last stop so that wasn't an issue (conductor had to wake me up a couple times). I never used to be able to fall asleep on a dime but I got used to it riding VRE everyday. And actually when I moved to Kingstowne, I slept on the train without ever missing the stop (only 25 minute train ride from L'Enfant).
I've slept a couple times on Orange/Silver between L'Enfant and Virginia Square but not like when I rode VRE. I've never missed my stop -- I think my training on the VRE has helped. I'm a very light sleeper so it's probably easier for me for that reason.
