Do you think it's totally normal or do you think it's slightly weird?

I close my eyes but I've never had a deep sleep. I don't see what's wrong with it. Some of these people wake up at 5:30, 6 in the morning.

I would be hesitant. First off, there's a good chance you'll miss your stop. Also, maybe someone steals your X and then darts out the doors while you're dozed off.

I am not talking about closing the eyes, I am talking about fallen asleep, and had to be waken up at the end of the metro line.

Regarding someone stealing your X and then darts out the door....what if you do it only during rush hours when there are full of other professionals around and you don't have anything that's valuable at all to be grabbed?

Regular occurrence on the Blue and Red lines in Chicago. I had a friend hop on in the Loop was supposed to get off at Western and ended waking up at OHare. DC Metro rides are so jumpy and stop/start I think it would be hard to sleep a whole train ride

Years ago when I commuted by Metro I often fell asleep on the ride home, and on several occasions missed my station!

Its not like anyone can fall asleep on cue. I doubt most people make the decision to take a nap. I think they just doze off.

I have dozed off myself. It happens after a long day sometimes. It's in no ways intentional. People work hard here, and sometimes staying awake is a struggle.
