I'll just go ahead and start a new thread since I'm no longer moving here. I'm now officially moved in I'm looking for recommendations of things to see, check out, good food etc. Today, going to check out the farmers market here and Tumwater falls. I've mostly just been apartment shopping but I did check out Point Defiance last week as well Priest Point park and Burfoot. Also spent a day in Portland.

Two places that are very convenient but don't get too much hype are (if you are even into these types of things):

1. The Nisqually wildlife preserve (Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge) -- right off the freeway at the Nisqually exit. We try to visit twice a yer and sometimes three. The epicenter of the 2001 earthquake was right off the water adjacent to the Nisqually Delta where the wildlife refuge is located. I've often wondered what the quake would have felt like at the epicenter. I was in Redmond at the time and was quite impressed how it shook the house. I was also in Seattle during the 1965 quake and that one was more memorable to me as I was walking to school and thought at the moment that it could be the apocalypse.

2. Yashiro Japansese Garden -- close to the downtown area on Plum Street. Not everybody is into Japanese gardens and although this isn't the best we've seen, it's still a place to wander and be in a beautiful and peaceful setting in the heart of the capital city of Washington.

Speaking of Tumwater Falls (the site of the old Olympia Brewing Company), I remember we always had Olympia Beer around when I was growing up. It seemed my dad's favorite. I remember the stubbies like this. I hope that the area around the falls will be kept preserved. The beer bottle with the image of the falls is one that brings back memories even though I wasn't and never have been a beer drinker.

eta: a friend just told me that the epicenter of a quake is typically not the strongest nor where the most shaking or damage is done so disregard my editorial comment about earthquakes.

Tumwater Falls is cool. Make sure to find out when the fish are running and go then, if I remember right it's a late summer/fall run. It's neat to see the salmon come up the falls, and up the fish ladders. The hatchery is right there so if they are processing fish you can see what is involved in that.

If you're not from around here go to Mt St. Helens. It's our coolest tourist attraction and even after all these years it is impressive and educational. But go on a very clear day. No point in going if the mountain is walled off in a cloud.

About the only time we go is when company is visiting... after a meal there is a loop trail down by the water which I think closes at dusk...

Don't forget the family home of Bing Crosby a little farther down.
