I'm just accepted a job in Parkland and now have to figure out a place to live - any suggestions for places to rent apartments? I'm hoping for a commute of 30 minutes or less.

I'm looking for somewhere reasonably safe, preferably with something of a neighborhood feel. I'm originally an east coaster, and while I'm resigned to driving to work, I'd love to be able to walk to things when I'm not working. I'm a pretty typical single 30something professional--I like coffeeshops, farmer's markets, bookstores, ethnic food, live music. I also like to run and walk in my spare time, and safe and nice places to do that are a definite plus.

I've read good things about University Place and the Stadium District - what would the commute to Parkland be like from there?

Those are both nice areas, but I think of University Place as a better fit for parents with children. Stadium District is nice, though. Probably a 20 ish minute drive to Parkland. Also look at the Proctor District.

Default Parkland

I am in the process of helping a few people relocate to the Tacoma area. I found some nice decent rentals in Downtown Tacoma in a secure building. I also saw some nice homes in the Canyon Road area of Puyallup which is about 20 mins from Parkland. You could take 112th st and be Parkland without the I5 traffic.

Thanks for the feedback so far!

Is I5 traffic bad in both directions at rush hour? If one way isn't as bad as the other, would I be going with peak traffic or the reverse? I have a reverse peak commute in my current situation in CA, and it's a sanity saver.

You don't even need to get on I-5 if you are living in say downtown and commuting to Parkland. Pacific Ave. (hwy 7) is the main road through Downtown Tacoma and Parkland. They are a little over 5 miles 10-15 minutes) apart, so no need for the freeway. On Pacific Ave. you would be doing more of a reverse commute because people working in Downtown will be leaving for the burbs.

Default I5

I 5 can be bad especially around the 512 merge at your point. i 5 around the dome can dicey. Depending on where in parkland you will be okay with 112th Street.

Ah, I hadn't even been thinking about non-freeway options. Silly me.

If I'm looking in the Stadium District, does anyone have specific suggestions on places to target and avoid? Is Craigslist the best way to find apartments, or are there less obvious ways to find places to rent?

Default Secure Buildings

The Stadium district does offfer some decent housing. Look at a building at fawcett & 5. It is a secure and controllrd parking. be cautious about the craigslist. There were instances of people taking deposits on properties that they did not own.I would look at a management company like www.wpmsouth.com . Hope this helps.

You can also contact a Tacoma Realtor to help you find rentals and show you rentals that are listed on the MLS. There is no cost to you, as the Realtor will be paid by the landlord. It's beneficial to have professional representation.

Craigslist is pretty good for finding a place. Some of the older places don't advertise on there so if you are looking for something more affordable you will have to walk around and call them.

Also look at condos for rent. There is one for rent in The Bridge (http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/apa/1775146013.html - broken link) building off 9th and Market for a good price, $875. It is a cool building, I have a few friends that live there.

From what I have heard the new buildings in the St. Helens neighborhood (between Stadium and the Theater District) have very few vacancies so if you are looking at a newer building you may want to jump on it if something comes up.
