New month today and no January weather summary thread, so thought I'd start one. My local station hasn't updated final figures yet (I'm still waiting for December!) but from what I've observed:

0 ice days
0 days snow lying
1 day snow falling
1 day dawn-til-dusk clear blue sky
1 thunderstorm

and here are the most widely quoted national figures:

CET (Central England Temperature) - 3.7C (0.5C below average)
England & Wales rainfall - 81.7mm (87% of average)
England & Wales sunshine - 58.0 hours (106% of average)

Generally, a very boring, forgettable month of weather here after such an abnormal December. Lots of sunless days with next to no rain and next to no diurnal range. Also, no fog that I remember and no decent gales, though the thunderstorm we had was the only one in winter I've ever seen. Apart from the spell mid-month with temperatures around 10C day and night and the few days at the end with highs and lows close to 0C, temperatures nothing remarkable. I'm surprised the national figures have come out sunnier than normal because that's certainly not been my impression here. We didn't particularly get the synoptics for a below-average month, but the seas and continent around us are still colder than normal.

It was the biggest warm up from December to January since 1875, and it was the eighth colder than average winter month in a row, the longest such run since the 1890s.

My father uses a certified company that measures the snow totals in my town. He needs it since he has a contract for plowing, shoveling, salting, sanding, etc.

So that's where you get your love of snow from then I thought you and nei would have had a much colder January relative to average than you did, but the mild start must have scuppered a possible very cold final score.

I subtracted the warmer 5 days (Jan 1-5) and recalculated the average. I got a high of 28.1°F (-2.2°C) and a low of 6.7°F (-14.1°C). This gives a mean of 17.4°F (-8.1°C), which is within a degree of Moscow's January average.

Even so, not all our days were extremely cold (for my standards); winter weather here is much more variable than the UK.

Not quite. Unfortunately he has to work crazy hours while the rest of us get to stay home. I love snow regardless though.

On the flip side, during the summer he hates when I harp on about rainy weather since it actually impedes on his work.

Subtracting the two warm days last month (January 1st and 2nd):

Average High: 30 F (4 F below average)
Average Low: 11 F (3 F below average)
Average Temperature: 21 F (3 F below average)

Knocks the averages down an extra degree.

Melbourne, Australia

January 2011

Average High: 26.5 ºC (79.7 ºF)
Average Low: 17.0 ºC (62.6 ºF)
Hottest Day: 38.1 ºC (100.6 ºF)
Coolest Day: 20.9 ºC (69.6 ºF)
Hottest Night: 23.0 ºC (73.4 ºF)
Coolest Night: 12.7 ºC (54.9 ºF)
Rainfall for January: 89.6 mm (3.53 inches)
Total Sunshine for January: 235.3 hours (7.6 hours per day)

Temperature wise it was right on the average although the nights were a little milder.

We had twice our average rainfall which kept our sunshine hours down.
