From NWS Brownsville:
"... Record lowest maximum temperature set at Brownsville...

A record lowest maximum temperature of 36 degrees was set at
Brownsville international Airport yesterday. This breaks the old
record of 39 degrees set in 1956. "

In Corpus Christi, they had 2 days in a row of record low maximums.. 02/02 had a high of 34 (record), yesterday had a high of 32 (another record).

Yesterday's high temp was also tied for the 10th coldest high temperature ever recorded here.

That's probably going to kill off any coconut palms in the area, or at least stun them badly enough to shut down their coconut production.

Where is this cold air coming from? "Blame Canada..."
The Arctic is rather warm so that is probably where the offset is..

There seems to be an unusually cold pocket of air centered over Oklahoma, Texas and Northern Mexico. Places where it's supposed to be cold like the prairie provinces of Canada are actually significantly above seasonal. Winnipeg and Regina have been above freezing the last couple of days which is coincidentally warmer than many places in Texas... how bizarre.

From what I've seen that isn't the whole story. That temp was reached at like 3am as temps started falling. The actual daytime high was probably 30. That seriously has to damage coco palms. Keep us posted on what happens to them.

I'm still amazed that SPI was at or below freezing during afternoon hours. Crazy.

I knew the so far mild winter before the freeze was too good to be true...lowest before the freeze was 37F and temperatures were quite above average. Ocean temperatures remained around 70F deep into January.

Whats makes it worse is that I think this was an early morning high, as afternoon temperatures were holding in the 29-30° range.

Brownsville is now up to 54F with Port Isabel at 58F. Tomorrow should reach into the low 70s.
