From NWS Brownsville:
"... Record lowest maximum temperature set at Brownsville...
A record lowest maximum temperature of 36 degrees was set at
Brownsville international Airport yesterday. This breaks the old
record of 39 degrees set in 1956. "
There seems to be an unusually cold pocket of air centered over Oklahoma, Texas and Northern Mexico. Places where it's supposed to be cold like the prairie provinces of Canada are actually significantly above seasonal. Winnipeg and Regina have been above freezing the last couple of days which is coincidentally warmer than many places in Texas... how bizarre.

From what I've seen that isn't the whole story. That temp was reached at like 3am as temps started falling. The actual daytime high was probably 30. That seriously has to damage coco palms. Keep us posted on what happens to them.
I knew the so far mild winter before the freeze was too good to be true...lowest before the freeze was 37F and temperatures were quite above average. Ocean temperatures remained around 70F deep into January.
Brownsville is now up to 54F with Port Isabel at 58F. Tomorrow should reach into the low 70s.
