And NYC is south of 41 parallel while North Pole/Fairbanks are north of 64th. Which means that the combination of low sun angle and very short daylight is a big problem. Most of the time you won't even be able to tell if it is gloomy or not simply because it is dark.

I imagine that aurora viewing and star gazing (for as long as you can be outside) would be excellent on clear winter nights, which I think tend to be abundant up there. Would be pretty awesome!
