A battle of two moderate oceanic climates at a similar latitude with very similar characteristics (for instance, both are subject to a foehn effect, leading to the odd very hot summer day). Remember factors such as seismic activity should not be considered.

Hobart - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Christchurch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Personally I'd happily live in either place, but would pick Christchurch by a hair as it seems to get a little more winter weather than Hobart (cold fronts seem to favour NZ). I don't mind coolish summers, great thing about these two cities is that you can actually enjoy the long summer evenings at 43S with comfortable temps, unlike parts of North America and southern Europe.

Since they're so similar, I don't which to choose. I guess whichever is cloudier.

Both cities feature great climates, BTW.

Hobart sunshine hours are considerably higher - about 2320 (1968 onwards); Christchurch 2143 for 1981-2010.

That is why I pitted these two together.

For me, desired sunshine depends on the season. I want more in the 'low sun' months, less in the 'high sun' months. I'd be happy if I never saw the sun in Sydney from November-March, for example.

We always get the short end of the stick.

I'll bet they even get less wind that we do?

Hobart for me as it's a little warmer and sunnier.

Both climates suck, and there is no hope of balmy summer evenings 90% of the time with such cool summer averages and cold seabreezes.

If I HAD to pick one, I'd probably go for Hobart, seems to be sunnier than Christchurch and with slightly higher winter lows.

Who are "we"? Ch'ch is above the NZ sunshine average, so if you don't like it, buy the ticket.
