Which of these temperate islands do you prefer? Ireland is about 2.5 times as big and is a bit further north but quite a bit less mountainous. I think I'll go for ireland for having the milder winters despite having overall much lower sunshine.

Depends on which part. Up here we are colder than Vancouver island but fhe south is milder.

For summer them, for winter my place. The snow could probably last longer here and we are more likely to see snow later and earlier.

Southern Ireland is mild, but wet & has cool summers...

Vancouver Island has a large variety, too. This location has warmer summers but probably more snow (46 inches / season) than any sea level location in Ireland:

Station Results | Canada's National Climate Archive

Victoria has winters roughly the same as the mildest city in Ireland (Cork?) but it's prone to cold spells, I'd say they're the best each island has to offer. Summers are somewhat warmer and much sunnier so even with the extra cold spells I'd place Victoria ahead. Gold River like much of the western part of the island gets socked with rain for half the year, but nice summers.

Northern part of Vancouver Island reaches Ireland-levels of sunshine

Ireland in general has significantly milder winters than Vancouver Island.
You certainly wouldn't see this growing in Victoria for example:

That's the main reason why I chose Ireland.

If cost of living matters, I would select Ireland. But Vancouver island is beautiful too
