I was floored first time I was in Chicago in July and saw the very nice sandy beaches and the blue water of Lake Michigan that looked like the water in the Carib. Very blue and clear. The beaches of the Great Lakes are America's best kept secret.
Summer fog seems like a contradiction in terms. Is it common there?
That's the usual on the American west coast (wind pulls in ocean air, which contains a marine layer — the air near the ocean condenses). I've seen much lighter fog on beaches in the east coast, and here valley fog from strong radiation cooling on summer nights as well. Happens only occasionally. We got fog Monday morning, not sure the reason, the morning temperature was 70°F.
