Here is the view from my front door. It's been raining every day lately, but snowing just above my house. The local ski hill has 2 feet of snow right now.

Sochi looks like a great place. I like the fact that summers are so warm and wet there, almost a dream climate. Half the year is a bit cloudy though, which is the only real negative.

I looking forward to seeing Sochi on the television during the Olympics. Sochi is very high on my list of places to visit.

Good to see NZ native plants in Russia. The Pampas Grass looks like the NZ species.

I love Sochi's landscape, too. City looks decent, too. But why is the Russian poster posting the most palm tree photos of the forum?

I'd curious to see photos of up in the nearby mountains.

Thanks, but I think that would be better to have slightly cooler or drier summers like Portland, OR, because if the temperature in Sochi reaches 30C in addition with high humidity then it feels not so comfortable, although 30C+ happens pretty rare here.

I also think to visit NZ, my brother lives in Auckland.

Thanks. But the cities and regions of Russia have very different quality of life and welfare. As well the poorest and richest regions have so large difference like countries in Europe.

Just I like palm trees, because I was born and grew up in the cool temperate climate, where I've seen only the oaks, birches, poplars, chestnuts, etc. instead the palm trees...

The landscape looks like West Virginia, this is one of my favorite places, but I never been there.

Sochi sounds a bit sticky during the summer.

I take it Sochi is good quality of life-wise compared to most of Russia?

I thought the mountains are much taller than West Virginia, with the highest peak in Europe (Mt. Elbrus). Seems like many peaks reach 3000 m to the east, though doesn't look like there's much road access.

Btw, while West Virginia may have its charms, it's not known for the best of quality of life. Vermont has similar terrain but is nowhere as rundown and nicer. Haven't been there, either, though.

No kidding. Vermont is less than 100 miles away from your town and you still have not been there. Just drive north this summer for a vacation.

I was referring to West Virginia. I've been to Vermont many times (it's 30 miles away). Biked there, too. Most recent time is shown in these photos. And here's a winter hike I did up Vermont's second highest peak.

You're right, despite its coastal location the temperature 30C+ feels pretty sticky, although probably not as sticky as in Batumi, Georgia.

Yes, especially for last decade the city has strongly changed, now Sochi is much more notable than capital of the province.

Despite the absolute altitudes, the Western Caucasus has many hilly lands with lower elevations like WV.

This is a pic of typical hilly landscape near town of Goryachy Klyuch.
