It happened in the southwestern part Germany, in a small village called Braunsbach. As you can see on the graphics from Donar, the affected area got 40 to 60mm rain, some parts even up to 120mm (!). That is about the average percipitation for May.
The town lies next to small river and is surrounded by hills.
Look closely at that graphic. The eastern US looks far worse off lol.
