So up until this past week, DC has been missing out on storms because they have not had moisture+cold air at the same time.
Why?
How come, as well, it seems DC's main snow storms all come from the southwest/Gulf of Mexico...whereas NY-NE get systems from other spots?
I suppose the reason is that when storms derive their energy from the Gulf they have enough time to strengthen before affecting the D.C. area, provided the cold air is being funneled there.
Forecast high has fallen from 50F to 40F. That's what it is right now. Might lose an inch or so off the snowpack, and some vulnerable spots may become bare, but otherwise the snowpack should stay. By tomorrow it'll definitely be safe for another few days as another cold front comes through.
Month to date, Salt Late City is 14.5°F above its February mean, and 4.3°F warmer than its warmest February on record. That'a bigger gap than the Northeast or Great Lakes cold anomaly in most if not all stations. Last time Salt Lake City recorded a below average low temperature was on January 22. Only February 1934 has been colder than this February here (accounting for the forecast for the rest of February). It had a similar warm west cold east pattern:
At the same time, there are some precedents for our current pattern, according to Weather Channel lead meteorologist Michael Palmer: “The highly amplified upper pattern with cross-polar flow that's been in place across North America this February is uncommon, but certainly not unprecedented. Some of the analogs that show up are February 1934, 1958, and 1963. In fact, much of that record cold from 1934 in the Northeast is being threatened with this current cold spell.” Showing how quickly things can change, the Dust Bowl year of 1934 went on to become the hottest year in U.S. weather history--a title it held until 1998.
The northwest territories came close to recording the coldest and warmest spots in Canada today.
Coldest morning low was -42C/-43F in Fort Reliance (62.7N 109.2W) where it has since warmed to -19C/-3F. Warmest afternoon high so far is 54F/12C in BC, but Yohin (61.2N 123.7W) recorded +10C/50F and Fort Liard +9C/49F at 60.2N 123.5W--a range of 54C!
It has been cold this month, but very dry since we had 8 inches/20cm in the first three days. Three days have been above freezing, 7 nights reached -20C/-4F. (average for the month is 31/15 (-0.5/-9.4) so much below normal) Only 0.02" of precipitation since the fourth.
Awesome day out there today, I maxed at 39°. A typical temp to see every day let alone twice in 2 weeks. lol
Current 4pm temps with the sun higher in the sky...
