When places get afternoon thunder and rain after a hot day, is the air still warm (above 24C/75F) or it cools down? Cities in come in mind are NYC, Miami, Atlanta, Washington, Shanghai, Savannah, etc. When they get afternoon thunder, what IS the air temperature?

Here in Sydney, as soon as thunder strikes it cools down. Air temperature quickly goes down to 20C (68F) or below. We seldom get 'warm thundery rain'.

Daytona Beach most often falls to around 23-24C towards the end of a summer thunderstorm, very rarely below 21.

At the beginning (at least for NYC), mid 80s on average. If it's earlier in the day, the temperature can drop during the storm and then go back up. Very intense, long storms usually cause a permament drop (to the low to mid 70s). Less intense ones a short lived and not as impressive drop.

The peak precipitation hour is usually late in the afternoon. Hours are less strongly peaked, but heavy summer precipitation is mostly from storm thunderstorms. For Hartford, CT:

Baltimore shows a similar pattern:

In the summer here, they usually drop it down to mid 70s, though on one occasion in June it dropped the temp down to 67. When it gets that low, it doesn't usually recover due to never ending cloud cover.

There were several days this summer in July when we had thunderstorms and the temperature only dropped to about 24C or 25C.

An example is 18th July, air temperature was 25C 9pm, one hour later it was 24C with heavy rain and thunder for 3 hours, where the temperature stayed at 24C and when the thunderstorms stopped at 1am the temperature was 23C and only dropped to 21C that night.

Also on 19th July at 6pm, temperature was 26C with thunderstorms, only dropped to 24C by 8pm when they finished

When there is a summer afternoon thunderstorm it usually drops to about 20-22°C, in heavier ones it can also get down to 17-18°C. It usually stays there after that until night time.

In some events however i have observed the temperature dropping from the late 20s into the low 20s during an early afternoon storm and right after that the temperature went back to the late 20s again.
Seems to be mostly the case when humid air is present.

Worst part in Atlanta is after a summer thunderstorm, when sun is out again and 92 F with 70 % humidity sucks the life out of you.

That's the time to distinguish between girls who wear makeup Vs those who don't .

We had 92F with 70% humidity (80F dew point) in the amazing hot & humid July of 2011.

But it's a very rare event here and probably in Atlanta as well.
