I like a high variability if the averages are far from my preferred conditions to reach good temperatures at least sometimes, winter and summer. If I like the averages then I don't need large fluctuations.
Some parts of southeast USA are experience great temperature differences within one week. Below 0C one day and 20C+ in the next few days. Very odd from an Australian perspective.
I prefer having more fluctuations in winter, because growing up in western Europe, i'm more used to it, and also because more fluctuations in summer would mean more cool days.
Where I live fluctuations are very small though.
When I think of fluctuations in winter, I mean days below 0c and others of like 15c.
More fluctuations in summer doesn't mean more cool days, i.e. Brisbane 2019: Dec 16: 41C and the next day Dec 17: 29C, if the definition of "cool" is below 25C.
Temperatures don't really fluctuate from day to day here - more typical to fluctuate within the same day here.
I think summer would be worse. Who wants 33C one day, and 17C the next day? -not me, that's for darn tootin sure. I would move back to Christchurch, if I wanted that sort of clownish weather.
What about 43C one day and 27C the next day? It depends on temperatures.
My location has temperature fluctuations in every season, but in my opinion the fluctuations are worse in summer/late spring. Our summers aren't really hot anyways, but having the temperature dip to 17-18C (64F) every other week sucks. It makes planning summer activities like beach/lake days or barbecues a nightmare because you never know if it is going to get a nice sunny 26C day or some bummy 17C weather. Also, when it does get hot it also comes out of nowhere and you barely have time to get used to the heat and the constant up and down is tiring.
In winter its not so noticeable, whether its -2C or -15C, I'm still going to be dressed warmly, might just add another layer and accessory if its colder. The only time fluctuations get annoying is when it fluctuates just around freezing point, then you get some pretty nasty icy conditions.
Imagine being nice and warm during summer and the temperature drops into the high 30s at night. Now imagine it's winter. You get a high of 30°F and a low of -10°F. It doesn't matter at all what the temperature is. Cold is cold. But it does matter during summer if you live someplace like Flagstaff where it's nice and hot during the day and very chilly at night time.
