Southern California thunderstorms are exceeding my expectations! Widespread rain, thunder, and lightning all over SoCal (even the beaches) and loving it!
Most areas are receiving between 0.20 and 1 inch with higher amounts possible in the mountains. Believe it or not, half an inch or so is all it takes to break all time records for the ENTIRE CUMULATIVE month of July at many of our lower elevations weather stations. I expect to see many records fall by tonight.

I think most posters are familiar with Californian weather patterns, they've been mentioned often enough. Btw, I was skeptical of your comment that El Niño would influence Californian summer rainfall; I assume California would be dry no matter what and El Niño is more of a winter thing.

El Niño puts the Pacific Hurricane season into hyperactive mode and increases the SST on the West Coast from Southern Mexico up through California; this gives gives their remnants a bigger chance of making it as far north as California. It also enhances the desert SW monsoon and increases the chance of the monsoon t-storms making it to the coast and valley. However, July is still exceptionally early for either event, even by El Niño standards. It's usually more of a late summer thing (mid August to early October).
