Windsor gets about 200 hours less than Detroit, despite being 20 miles and no obvious microclimate. Only difference is measuring difference. A number of other US-Canada border differences show similar patterns. [Is Seattle really sunnier than Victoria? ]Whether the US method is better or not, the European method is what's used worldwide. So if making international comparisons, corrections need to be made.
Detroit airport is located away from the river (20 miles), while Windsor airport is right in the city. That makes a big difference. While Detroit and Windsor are located next to each other, it is 31 miles from Detroit airport to Windsor airport which is significant.

I still don't think an annual mean differnce of 2.3F is all that significant. The annual mean differnce between London and Paris is 2F. I doubt many people think of Paris climate as that drastically different or warmer than London.
The annual mean for the Paris UHI is 2F warmer than London's outskirts. If you compare Orly and Heathrow, they are about the same. There are plenty of people on here and in the Europe forum who think Paris is drastically different to London.

Hate to burst your bubble Botev but nei is correct.
Different measure system = different readings. About 150 to 200 hrs difference annually.00
When comparing US sunshine data with other countries chop off 150 to 200 hrs from US totals.
Windsor airport in the city....only problem with that is Windsor is no big city, population about 250K
IMO not big enough to skew sunshine stats.
US doesn't measure sunshine hours anymore (after 1990). How can you measure sunshine hours differently? 1 hour of sunshine is exactly 1 hour of sunshine. It's the same as rainfall, temperature and wind speed.

Same here in Canada, Environment Canada can't be bothered keeping sunshine hour stats.
FYI US weather service used a different method with a more lax threshold on what
constitutes a |"sunshine hour" . Most of the rest of the world used Campbell-Stokes sunshine readers,
invented by Campbell back in the 1850s and improved by Stokes in 1879.
19th century technology....I wonder how accurate the reading were anyway
