Oh yeah, it's the seat of the US military, you kidding?
I was with a friend in Toronto last year, and he took some snapshots of the US Consulate there, and this dude came running outside and forced him to delete the pics he took.
Imagine that, a US official dictating what a Canadian citizen can do on Canadian soil - I felt supremely embarrassed about my country. They should have at least put signs out front "no photography" - good grief.

It's stupid because you can stand outside and take pics.

Couldn't he have walked away? Did he have any authority outside the consulate?
