Both are mild oceanic climates with a winter rainfall maximum. Both are at the latitudes of 41'. Which do you prefer?

Wellington or Istanbul?

I had absolutely no idea Istanbul was this far north.

Wellington is my choice. Istanbul has some awful highs, specially the records. Also, Wellington's windier and rainier nature is more of my taste.

But that the extremes, isn't it? Wellington's average highs tend to be lower than Istanbul's, being much lower in summer.

Yeah true Wellington is much cooler in summer but also way less prone to snow events in winter which is important to me

Istanbul for seasonality, although I find it strange that they have cloudier winters than us. Wellington is kinda boring.

I thought this one would be an easy one for Istanbul , but Istanbul is colder than I thought -my town at the same latitude, has a warmer annual average maximum, which I didn't expect at sea level in Europe.

Istanbul does have very nice summers, but also cool winters with quite low sunshine. It is also 100 hours sunnier than Wellington, which is in it's favour.

Wellington has a much worse summer, but nicer winter. It can get some diabolical weather at times, but it's warmer lows would mean a better range of tender plants

On balance, I will choose Wellington.... by a whisker.

Not for the first time, I will provide some corrections to the outdated Wiki. data. 30-year mean sunshine is 2113 hours. 30-year temp mean is 13.8C at sea level, not 12.7C (Kelburn site at 126m ASL has 30-year mean of 12.9C). Rainfall average is correct.
Tmin even at Kelburn hasn't dropped to 0C since July 1965.

I would say Wellington because the temperature is very comfortable all year round and it's never hot there. (The all time record is 86F and 30C) Istanbul has the possibility of some very high temperatures.
