Procrastinated on this one as solutions were all over the place for few days (normal when your a week+ out) but the chance was being shown a lot.

I put "winter storm" in title since we are in winter and it's a storm. Some will get rain (probably the coast) and some could get a snowstorm.

Dec 9th I showed the multiple storms coming up and this one was on the table. Just faster now.

Dec 21st - Give or take. This one changing solutions a lot still being 11 days out.

I will update what latest models say for this storm then post the OBS's when (if) it happens. Lets have some fun.

Here is last nights Euro.. Not the best position for the Low for me or the coast but notice where its below freezing at 850mb. That would be the snow areas. This doesn't tell you where the precip shield is though.

The Low goes over Cape Code and Nova Scotia.

Here is the snow total from that Euro

12"+ for Northern Maine and 2"+ for interior and higher elevations over 4" possible.. Timing going to play a major part in snowfall starting in afternoon/evening. but Euro surface temps aren't that bad looking actually Friday afternoon.. 30s for the start for interior then dropping to 20s when it passes. 40s for the coast.

New England does well on this run (VT, NH, ME)

Latest GFS6z just out. Similar to Euro now. Storm comes from Mid Atlantic, crosses over CT, over Boston as a 981mb Low then off coast of Maine. Note where the 850mb freeze line is. Those to the West of that is snow

So like for Nei, starts as rain, heavy rain, then changes to snow as it pulls away and cold air comes filtering in with precip still around.

Six inches of snow for us right now would be a Godsend. I'll take it.

GFS Runs 4x a day (6z, 12z, 18z, 00z)
EURO Runs 2x a day (12z, 00z)
Canadian Runs 2x a day (12z, 00z)

Here is the 12z GFS today.

Track is not something we really zero in on until about 5 days out. Right now we have to see if the storm is still showing up.

It is again on this run.

The track itself is perfect on this run for the coast to see snow.
The 850mb freezing line off the coast is perfect.

Problem is GFS didn't phase as well and precip is lacking so is the snow. But again, those details you shouldn't worry about until we get closer.

Northern New England get screwed with a track like that. Heaviest precip would be south of there.

Update:

Latest trends are a mess. What happens is the Cold air comes in too quick and suppresses the storm south. That means the storm exits the Mid Atlantic (with rain) and that's it. Arctic air moves in with a front in Northeast..

I'll update if further changes happen.

So "right now" all the Northeast gets is a front with light rain, cold air, and then snow showers here and there. No "Storm".

One thing is for sure, this front/storm will set the stage for finally the coldest air of the season from South to maybe Northeast. After the front leaves, the trough digs down and moves East!

Euro00z Saturday morning has the 540 line to Florida! Technically could snow in the Georgia mountains but there's no trigger for moisture. In fact I see it's picking up flurries/snow showers for TN, NC, WV hills. We'll see.

Check out the 850mb temps. Now that is winter! Ridge in West, Jet dips in East and there's Arctic air inside it. Freezing line goes to Orlando??? Doubt it. Probably stop in Georgia.

And guess what -10C over Warm waters does. LAKE EFFECT SNOWS! Look at first map and the moisture around all the Lakes on 1 particular side.

The good part about this cold air aloft is that it's coming with northwest winds and not those crappy maritime northeast winds. My forecast low Saturday night is now 31 F and even downtown Savannah may have the opportunity to hit freezing (first of the season) Sunday morning. Notice how the high moves in over northern Mississippi? That's the perfect setup for a northwest flow across Georgia this weekend. Hopefully that setup holds.
