I am wondering if you guys think Vancouver should start planting feather palms like Jubaea Chilensis and Butia Capitata all over the city? Do you think the climate here could support that? I know CIDP is a bit too tender for here but what about other feather palms? Would they look great here or do you think they would look completely out of place here?

I have no particular clue about these palms, but aside from the immediate shoreline, aren't frosts very frequent in winter? Surely won't help.

Jubaea chilensis, yes. Butia is about as hardy as CIDP so it wouldn't survive.

So you think that Jubaea should be planted in Vancouver?

Yes they would not be suitable for everywhere.. just along the coastline but fortunately, Vancouver has a lot of coastline being comprised of many peninsulas and a few islands.

Plant in coastal areas of Victoria. Canada needs a "palm tree city". But not in Vancouver. I just feel like they would fit Victoria better. Vancouver is a very PNW-looking city, very similar to Seattle, while Victoria seems a bit more California-like, so the palms would fit better there.

Downtown Vancouver has almost the same temps as Victoria except that there is many times the rainfall and much less sunshine.

If a plant will grow and multiply without having to be sheltered from the elements, then why not?

The exception to that is when it's something extremely invasive and toxic, like giant hogweed.

Temperate rainforests are beautiful. Why ruin it with tacky ugly imported palm trees? What's not to love about this pleasant, soothing forest landscape?
