The temperare deciduous forest of Patagonia peak by late March/Early April in Tierra del Fuego, which is the first place to get autumn colours there, due to the higher latitude and cold.
Yea but that's already autumn for y'all. I'm asking during summer so for you it would be Dec-Feb.
Our birches start yellowing and browning in mid-August, although only very slightly and not nearly all of them.
I can't recall anything looking like autumn in August ever here Having said that, August is an out and out summer month here, especially with the coastal seasonal lag resulting from being on the shore of the main Baltic!

Last summer I drove up from Småland to Umeå in mid-August, and lots of trees had fall foliage even as far south as Växjö. Lots of Maples with bright red patches and whatnot.

Sounds illegal given you were 17 at the time?
Växjö is inland and at a high latitude with no real blockage of cool highland maritime air though. Different stuff by the coast and in lowland areas.
Around here (east-central WI) the leaves will often begin turning colors in late August, especially if we have a cool summer. They aren't fully changed until well into September, though, and they don't peak until early-mid October IIRC, so I'm not sure if it counts.
We have some strange north american trees which start to have a bit of yellow and brown on their leaves by late summer (early September) but the leaves don't fall until December-January.
In fact a part of their leaves remain all of the winter, in some trees the majority falls in December, in others in January... strange! and they grown up again fast, in the 3rd week of February they already have the sprouts (like some small brown things) and by late February they start having the first leaves. By early March they already are full of light green leaves, which is my favorite color for the leaves in a tree. 1 week after, the leaves became full green.
They're amongst strangest trees I've seen. They have a white trunk with even whiter things on the trunks giving the impression of being "holes" but they aren't.
