8:20pm map. A look at the 5000' temps and who's reporting what.

4hrs ago that freezing line was over DC, now it's near Philly. (warm air at mid levels moving north)

It's above freezing even north of Pittsburgh now.

NYC surface temps in mid-upper 30s there so there's mixed reports around there.

Lightly Snowing NYC suburbs though, classic Urban heat island affect.

Storm center is over Kentucky right now.

Urban heat island in progress.

Raining around NYC but snowing outside the "Island". Not sure those rain drops are reported accurately in CT. Sad to hear its raining in NYC. too close for my comfort!

Ridgefield, CT not far from me. 14 miles from the CT coast. 1.5hrs Northeast of NYC. 20 minutes north of me.

Just heard from a Meteo on Accuweather Channel with DirecTV that there was supposed to be a Low that developed ahead of the front over Delaware today that didn't. That Low would of given us a Northeast flow and locked the colder air in place more, but because it didn't form, the southerly push is stronger hence why NJ, NYC seeing rain already.

Coating here now

So what are we seeing here? Cold air damming down the Appalachians, or something else?

It makes for a very pretty map.

No CAD happening l. Just a warm push of air north and cold air locked in on the interior.

Current Map.

Mesoscale (blue outline) for Heavy Snowfall rates expanded into NJ, Southern NY and CT next couple hours.. https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/

This is when most of the accumulations will happen. Then its changeover time.

Note, raining on parts of Long Island.

2200 hour OBS (from 1823-2200, lack of 1900, 2000, 2100 due to not at station)

Outside temperature 30.4°F
Dewpoint temperature 28.6°F
Total snowfall 0.7"
Total SWE 0.07"
Total ratio 10:1
Hourly statistics unavailable due to lack of OBS

Current conditions:
Windy and SN, would estimate rate at 1" per hour

Road conditions:
Snow covered and wet-slippery. Not deep powder to get stuck on but unsecured snow-to-pavement interface due to above-freezing temperature prior to snowfall

I heard a report of thunder & rain in Norwalk. Doubt it but can't completely deny it
