Been to both, and Barcelona by a mile. Green parrots flying around in the trees, palm trees everywhere, orange trees, etc. Winter temps look perfect for me. I was there in September and was just like here in Philly. Med sea was in the low 70's. Great time all around.
NYC, can't stand the winters. So, therefore it loses imo.
NYC easily, as it has 4 distinct seasons, without commonly being extremely hot or cold. I also like the fact it's wetter but equally sunny to Barcelona. While Barcelona looks to have a comfortable climate, NYC's looks a lot more interesting imo.
Since I'm often in/near NYC I can attest that the climate is pretty intresting, and severe heat/cold temps are not often an issue, or at least they don't last long. The weather is pretty nice (I love the hot summers of NYC) from April though early November.
However, after mid November/early December just too cold for me. Barcelona would have much better winters for my tasts - a mean temp of 48 in January is much better (as WWF) than the 32 F mean temp in NYC in Jan. I would go with Barcelona for the better winters.
Have to go with Barcelona. Much warmer and more pleasant year-round. Also, I like the rather atypical precipitation pattern for a Mediterranean climate.
I will pick NYC, despite the cold winters. Barcelona is just too dry.
