Problem when you look at that chart is the water temp rises almost 10 degrees during the day. If you look at other locations nearby its less than 1 degree.
A 24 hour period and the water only changed .2 degrees. The water is very warm almost 91 degrees. But I think the 100 degree reading is in shallow water that was warmed by the sun.
Good point, but doesn't negate the fact that the SSTs are all very warm relative to average in a larger geographical area there.

The North Atlantic is much warmer than normal. I agree. That means low 90's not 101 degrees. They never should have put that out there that is was possibly true.

You are right about this, at least from what I've experienced.
I've snorkeled in the Bahamas in August and off southeast Florida, and many times the SST temps they report are for inshore and bay locations (that's were the sensor is). I have a watch that records depth/temps/,,,etc and the temp I see even 100 yards out is always a bit cooler than what they are reporting in the bays and inlets. Still, 91 F SST is really warm, even by Florida/Bahama standards.

It is and it can probably get warmer. You are right 91 is really warm. 100 would be off the charts hot but considering the air temperature around Key West has averaged a high of 92 and a max of 96 with the average daily temperature at 88. Hard to imagine the water temperature being hotter than the hottest temp for the entire month. Sure in shallow water but not in the open ocean.
Looks like today breaks the 31 day record. Finally!
Since PHX had almost the entire month of July with daily high temps above 110F/43C, I am guessing they might have set new monthly overall temperature records too? Such as highest daily average temps for a month, highest daily average low temps for a month and highest daily average 24 hour temps for a month?

After two "cool" days of 109 and 108 Phoenix will be back to 110 today and at least 113 for the next 6 days. A new 110 streak is about to begin. August might be just like July.

Same for my area and the driest ever.
