We all know that San Diego and most of California have a great climate... of course it is also ridiculously expensive to live there and most normal people cannot afford to do so.

So what are some places with good climates that don't get talked about all the time?

First one that comes to my mind is the mountains of North Carolina, areas around Asheville for instance and even over towards Knoxville, Tennessee.

San Francisco is underrated. There is a saying "If you don't like the weather, move over a few blocks."

So you want good or underrated?
Upstate NY is not great but it is underrated IMO. It isn't any worse than most of mid-west or New England, just a bit snowier. Get a Subaru and snow tires. Summers are very very nice, though.

Coastal areas of mid-Atlantic states are very pleasant usually - relatively mild winters with summers moderated by ocean breezes. You still get the 4 seasons without extreme temperatures.

Outside the US, central Costa Rica is hard to beat.
Edit: The Gov't of Costa Rica actually encourages people from the US (and probably Canada) to retire in their country so it is fairly easy to move there, as long as you aren't worried about finding a job.

Most places with a nice continental climate (Minneapolis) have underrated climates. San Diego's climate is ridiculously overrated.

Call me bias, but I think West Texas' climate is underrated. There is a real winter, but it isn't too cold. Summer isn't scorching hot like the southwest, but it's not humid like eastern half of the country. The only drawback is the occasional bout of ridiculously windy weather.

The Humid Subtropical US (Providence, RI to Brownsville, TX [excluding South FL])

I still prefer the Southern part of this climate though.

I think Seattle and Vancouver are underrated - a touch of winter with very rare heavy snowfalls - NO HEAT in the summer. I can deal with clouds and light rain.

Los Angeles (where I live) is WAY overrated. Late summer and early autumn are like an oven of ozone and dust. It's hot and miserable. When it rains, it is torrential. I remember one December night a few years ago with 6 inches of rain. The sound on the roof was deafening and terrifying. May and June are usually nice - 60F/72F
