I am wondering what is the coldest climate overall that you've been in (average yearly temperature). A few years ago, I had to go to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada for work. It was the first week of May, and there was a blizzard with the temperature of about 10F which didn't include the windchill factor. If there was ever a place that was hell on Earth, Churchill would be close to it....
Let's see. I was born and lived for 12 years in Riga, Latvia (avg yearly temp 44F/6C).
I've visited:
Stockholm, Sweden (43F/6C)
Tallinn, Estonia (42F/5C)
St. Pertersburg, Russia (41F/5C)
Moscow, Russia (40F/4C)
Quebec City, Canada (40F/4C)
Lake Placid, NY (40F/4C)
All these places I visited during summer so I can't say from experience how brutal the winters are. I also stayed at a few ski resorts in upstate NY and Vermont in winter but I couldn't say how cold the average temperatures are there.
Atigun Pass in the Brooks Range is probably the coldest place, on average, that I've ever been.
Wow.. definitely cold up there. I've not been I read somewhere that the Dalton Highway which passes through there is snow covered in July! I think it must be beyond the tree line. What is it like to drive on the Dalton if you've driven it? I think Churchill is pretty much at the tree line. There are trees there but they are stunted and look very much on the verge of death... Btw, I checked and I think Churchill's yearly average temperature is about 20F (-6C) and is therefore in the zone of continuous permafrost.
There were some patches of snow in early September. It's at 4700 feet elevation...snows all year too.
I've only gone through there once and the road all the way was really nice and wide for the most part...especially once you get on the flat portion of the North Slope. I was doing 85 mph in that area.
Atigun Pass has an annual average temperature of 8.1F...Prudhoe Bay has an annual average temperature of 11F.
I've lived in the same area my entire life, but it gets cold here. I remember that Cold Canadian and I did a temp comparison and my area is colder.
The coldest I can remember~can't remember the actual temp, but with windchill is was 90 below zero. Yup, not a misprint. It was a VERY cold morning and my car didn't start and it hurt to breathe. That was horrible.
Our coldest temp that I remember last year was minus 37~not sure what it was with windchill, but since they changed it a few years ago, I doubt it was more then 50 below. WAY too cold for me.
I also remember a period of three weeks~it was within the past 10 years~we didn't WARM UP to zero. Our daytime temps were about minus 10 and our nighttime temps were 20 to 30 below. I didn't think it'd EVER warm up.
