We are considering a move to somewhere in South FL (WITH jobs ) My in-laws are in Lake Worth and recommended Wellington. We are moving from the Pacific NW (where we are from, although we have lived in Orlando and know we like FL). I'm wondering if we will be in for any kind of culture shock. We're used to pretty casual, laid-back, down to earth lifestyle. Is there a certain "vibe" to the area? Does it have a strong community feel? Obviously people are all different but sometimes a little generalization is possible and helpful. We are mid-30's with two school-age kids.

I rented a short term rental in Palm Beach Polo Club and mainly stuck around that area near the mall. Anyhow I thought it was safe area with a younger feel then in Boca where I live now. I am 32 but single. Wellington was close to restaurants, shopping, etc. I think the schools are pretty good as well. Some parts of Wellington I have heard are less desirable but not sure where. Have you thought of Jupiter or Palm Beach Gardens which I also heard are nice family areas plus close to the beach?

Our daughter and her husband live in Wellington and love it. We enjoy visiting, seems clean and safe. Their neighborhood is doing very well also with few foreclosures. I understand the schools are good too.

I live in Wellington, if you have not been here in a while and remember it like it was 10-15 years ago, you'd be in for a shock. It is indeed a family oriented area, with plenty for kids to do. They have a annual Christmas parade and Fireworks show and etc,. There is no downtown/main street feel, because Wellington doesn't have that. If that's what your looking for you won't find it here. As far as being laid back, that's subjective. It's a mixed area of very wealthy, upper middle class and middle class (do they exist?) and some so so areas of Section 8 and the associated issues. Between October and April it's seasonal here as with most of the state, the big deal is Polo and Horse Shows.

I'm amazed you both found jobs here, that alone is more of a shock then anything since things are not good in the county little alone the state on the job market.

If you want a Portland feel, you'd be best hanging out in Lake Worth.

My husband and I are from NY. We have decided to move to Wellington. After much research we found Boca, Wellington and Jupiter to have teh best schools. Boca is a bit old but nice and Jupiter is a bit too quiet for us. Wellington has a lot around and close to West Palm.

How did you find jobs? I'm trying and not having much luck right now. As soon as I do find a job we are moving. I'd appreciate any tips you have.

I agree Wellington has a younger feel then Boca. What type of training, education or work experience do you have?

I am an event planner. I've worked for a non-profit the last 7 years. I'm very open to exploring new opportunities with in event planning and with out. Do you know of any staffing agencies or head hunters I can contact down there?

Thanks so much for the input. We had thought about going back to the Orlando area but it would be nicer to be near family. It sounds like good fit. My husband actually does consulting from home ( I help out some but am mostly a stay-at-home mom) and can work from anywhere in the country. So he didn't actually GET a job in FL, he'd just be bringing it with us. Although we are somewhat concerned about the financial state of the area in general...
