The job market is hard every where. If this is not an issue what made you think of Boca? I would rent first. I am from MI and I agree the lack of winter in FL is wonderful. With any move it is good to have savings as well for those things that seem to happen at the wrong times. Do you know people in FL? That may be something too to think about. It was hard leaving family but for me it was still a better choice to move.
The OP is an older woman so I must ask -what communities are a little more geared to us childfree pre-retirees who seek a less frenetic environment and where schools are not an issue but access to convenient shopping, and cultural venues and nice walkable parts of town are? we don't golf or boat - yikes! I am interested in detached single adult type home with some privacy ie trees not necessarily more land - number of bedrooms not as big an issue as nice entertaining spaces- would like to stay under 400k for around 3000 sq ft if possible. Thanks!

well I would look in Boca West they dont have alot of children...but there is an equity fee to get into the development...In Boca/Delray unless your in a 55 adult community good luck finding this criteria where there are no kids..Especially in Boca..Although you might want to look into East Boca...Now you can also try Delray that might be a good fit as well closer to the water you might find alot less kids as well...

Ha same can be said for the last place we lived..and if you think its only Florida well then your mistaken so you might as well tell each state that seems to be popular amongst northerners not to move there...Our friends here who are from NY are great people and DH and I are not rude nor are we mean and honestly its no different here than any of the 6 states Ive lived in...and yes Im from Brooklyn NY...

We can choose between living on Long Island in Sea Cliff, Glen Head or Port Washington and getting into Real Estate in Brooklyn or moving to Boca Raton. Cost of living, way of life, schools and safety are what's most important to me. We have a son who will be in second grade next year. I lived in Boca Raton when I was 9-14 years old. The schools were good then, but I'm sure they are different now. Looking at either Addison Mizner, Boca Middle and then Boca High or Calusa Elementary, Omni Middle then Spanish River High or Sunrise Park, Eagles Landing Middle then W. Boca High. Any suggestions about which is the best now or which ones to stay away from? I know how good the schools are in NY because I went there after Boca. They are the best, but it costs a fortune to live in a shoe box out there. I found rentals in Boca between $1100 and $1400 and on Long Island from $1600-$2000 to start out. Buying is absurd...I have for a decent house, Boca around $225K-$400K and those Long Island areas $600k-$800K. It would cost about 50% more all around to live in NY, so as far as cost goes, Boca gets the win there. Schools I give to NY by a big margin, but would love some feedback on that because I know Boca has some of the best schools in that area. Way of life I give to Florida with pools, beaches, sports and laid back lifestyle, although I do love New York. Culture goes to NY. Safety I have no idea and that's where I need the most help. I don't care about snobby people because they are everywhere and I"m used to them, I care about jerkoffs that have nothing better to do than get into trouble. My top priority is safety for my family and a good education for my boy. I love the four seasons, but have been out of the snow for 12 years and not sure I feel like shoveling it again and scraping ice off of my windshield. Any thoughts, advice, experience or knowledge would be much appreciated!

Take Care
I have lived on LI most of my life and I can tell you it is a financial struggle. Property taxes are absurd for a postage stamp piece of property. The cost of living is very high here. I don't know how it is in Florida, but I believe many people on LI are unfriendly. I think its because they have to work so hard to afford life that they lose sight of everything else. And the weather---I realize its hot in Florida but its frigid in NY. Depends on what you can tolerate more.

I live in NJ. Property taxes are obscene. Also, the commute is terrible. I go into Manhattan and it is just sick. Not mention the cost of the commute. The monthly train ticket is disgusting especially considering NJT is so unreliable. My sister lives in PBG. She doesn't know how good she has it.
