I have been offered a great job based in Jane Lew, starting January 2012. My initial excitement ( I am moving from Chicago and I HATE living in a big city) has now been replaced by worry about finding somewhere to live. I am not ready to buy a place yet - the location of my final assignment is not yet known, I may relocate within West Virginia after a year. I am not seeing a lot of rentals online- or those that are listed are way out of my price range. I need a three bedroom that accepts two cats. At this point I would consider a single family house, apartment or townhome.

Any one have any tips for me? I will be in the area from December 10-23rd.

First of all, I'm sure it goes without saying that you're going to experience the culture shock of a lifetime. Just want to make that absolutely clear.

If it were me, I'd be looking in and around Bridgeport. That's where all your amenities are going to be and it's a newish suburban area where you'll be among some other transplants working at the FBI, Fairmont Tech Park, WVU, etc. It's 15-20 miles up Interstate 79 from Jane Lew and also puts you closer to Morgantown.

If you don't mind me asking, what job or what line of work is bringing you to WV?

That looks like a nice complex. Is that what they were building right off the interstate when I went through Fairmont a few months ago? My only concern would distance. Isn't White Hall kind of far from Jane Lew? Or do people regularly make similar commute?

It's about availability...everything is taken with the thousands of gas well workers here from Texas and Lousiana.

Many are buying Crew cab pickup trucks and sleep in them.

Some pool together and buy a home, knowing that they will be here at least 5/7 years.

The commute is about 35 miles...at 75 miles per hour that's just a few minutes.

Many buy homes in Jane Lew and commute to Morgantown...depends on where you hail from.
The Novians don't give it a thought.

What you saw a few months ago was the new office center for Allegheny Power....or at Jerry Dove, the new 900 million UHC complex.

This company Rental Properties Bridgeport and Clarksburg West Virginia (http://www.venturehomes.net/default.asp.pg-RentalProperties - broken link) has some rentals in Bridgeport but I am not sure of your price range and pets are accepted. However, it looks like you have use their real estate services in order to rent from them in order to have a short term lease.

Rentals are hard to come by in Bridgeport. If you include Clarksburg, your possibilties may expand. I saw a couple of rentals in the Clarksburg paper online Clarksburg Exponent Telegram Online (http://www.exponent-telegram.com/admarket/real_estate/ - broken link). Not all are listed though. It might help to subscribe to the paper to get a full listing if you can. Jan 2012 is a short time away but it still may be helpful to get a copy.

Weston is the closest town of size to Jane Lew. Here is there paper http://www.westondemocrat.com/classifieds.html.

Thank you all for those tips!

My job is with the West Virginia Education Association. I actually was born in Yorkshire, in the north of England and moved to the States for school 10 years ago. Since then my family ( my kids are American citizens) and I have lived in Iowa, Chicago ( worst place ever! ) and in a small town in Southern Illinois for 7 years ( loved it!). I grew up in a village in Yorkshire so I am used to small town life, although living in the US certainly took some getting used to! My husband is actually Dutch ( 1st generation) so that has also been very interesting for him. Everyone is usually very friendly and we've always put a lot of effort in becoming active members of whatever community we are living in.

Thank you all again for your responses!
