I will work for 4 months in Yorktown Heights and I am currently looking for housing options. I am now considering a long-term stay at the YMCA in white plains. I don't know anything about YMCAs, but I am fine with a spartan room and I would really enjoy having a swimming pool and a gym in the same building.
I now read that there was a suicide/murder only 3 months ago in that exact YMCA, which does not really fit the picture that I imagined of such a "family" YMCA.
So, what is it like to live in a YMCA? What kind of people live in YMCAs? Would you live in a YMCA? Are there similar long-stay places in the area? What are the rules in such a YMCA, curfew, overnight guests, alcohol etc.?
Why exactly? Any more opinions? I am from a country where YMCAs do not exist - I am hoping for a cool hostel-like place, but some places seem to be more like homeless shelters
Why would you want to live at a Y? Do you really want to live in this type of setting?
The rate at the Y in White Plains is $185/wk, which comes out to $740/mo. I would just look on Craigslist (and other sites) for a single-room rental/sublet in Westchester. There are plenty that will fit your budget.
I agree - you might be able to find a sublet for just a few months a bit cheaper and then you would have some more creature comforts.
You could also check on Airbnb, flipkey, vrbo - some of the places in Westchester are more suited for renting during the summer (near lakes in the woods) so that the off season rate would be cheaper
There is nothing hip about the YMCA.
It is more like a homeless shelter
Get a single-room sublet in Yorktown or nearby.
Some YMCA's are actually pretty nice, even better than some local hotels. 4 months is not a long time and you'll probably save a ton of money vs. staying at a short stay or subleasing in Yorktown areas.
