Requests for information about Spruce Pine as a second home location or relocation spot has increased substantially. Spruce Pine is known as a center for premier craft in Western North Carolina. Hundreds of artists including world renown potters and glass blowers live in and around Spruce Pine due in large part to nationally known Penland School of Craft. Spruce Pine is also gaining popularity as an outdoor recreation destination with premier trout fishing, hiking, biking, canoeing, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Appalachian Trail. Don't be so quick to snub your nose at a place that many are finding as a welcome surprise.

You may call it "snubbing your nose" but we on this forum call it giving our opinion. That's the entire point here BTW!
To each his own and we welcome all opinions. We all have different tastes and preferences. Because we might prefer other placed to Spruce Pine doesn't mean it's an undesirable town.
If Spruce Pine is doing well then that is great news. Especially if it is able to maintain it's rural atmosphere and unspoiled natural beauty.
Spruce Pine is a cute little town. DT's coffee shop is GREAT and we like the Knife and Fork too. There are lots of arts & crafts people in the area. We like the Blue Ridge Soap shed & stop by twice a year to stock up on homemade soaps. Nice area for horseback riding, hiking, anything outdoors too. The real estate prices are reasonable and the cost of living is low. Just depends on what you're looking for. A front porch with a mountain view isn't a bad place to be. And it even has the Internets!!!
You may also want to consider Burnsville, which is west of Sprice Pine between Spruce Pine and Mars Hill. Burnsville is a quaint small town that preserves it small town heritage. Burnsville turned down the Wal-Mart, which ended up in Spruce Pine. Also, Burnsville is more conviently located to Asheville than Spruce Pine.
