Acutally my friends in Brevard arn't "always trying to get people to move to Asheville" (Brevard or anywhere in WNC) but just know that is where I want to move and are trying to assist me.

As far as the situation that you describe: there are horror stories in all parts of the U.S. regarding the economy (not just WNC), housing down turns, etc, but to me it all goes back to personal responsiblity. I would never take out a mortgage or loan that I know is over my head regardless of what a bank says.
I'm the same, I don't want a mortgage at all, my last place I paid in cash, but I'm not going to pay off our current one until I know we are staying here or moving back to Asheville, or wherever.

The point of my post was for the OP, who I believe said her significant other was in construction. Most of the people that I personally know in construction/remodeling business are hurtin for certain.

And as to the price of homes, until the recent price collapse, you were hard pressed to find a nice house less than $300,000, so 1/2 million dollar homes were not all that uncommon. I'm surprised at the number of $150,000 double wides in Asheville area.

I moved to TN and even over here there are a plethora of overpriced homes, with even less of a natural draw than Asheville.

Asheville is a beautiful place, but I'm afraid for the next year of so, the local economy is still going to suffer.

Take care and good luck.

Tony

Outgoing, friendly people do not necessarily translate to JOBS, which I believe was the OP's question. I'd rather be employed around less friendly people than unemployed around friendly folks

Ah and I never said that it did "translate to JOBS."

I was specifically addressing the poster who stated that, "People are very introverted and untrusting of outsiders in the mountains"

I countered that I had met many outgoing and friendly people in the mountains. Trusting people too.

People might try living within the means of the area....

In other words, don't buy a 3000+ square foot home with every bell and whistle and PAY the price of all that and then expect to be able to afford it on the salaries paid here....

But then people are,by and large incredibly unrealistic.

And Brevard is full of nothing but retirees and transplants. I was addressing the fact that as an outsider the OP would have a very hard time finding work because once outside a city, aka asheville, people in the mountains don't look for anyone new to hire. They already have their network and dont need to find someone else. Being a handy man is much different than being a receptionist. Most people want references these days if they do decide to hire you. So to not have any references in the area will make it extremely difficult too.

I also think its really stupid to tell someone to "go for it" and come down in this economy when they have a large family to support. Especially coming from someone who hasn't done the same yet because of jobs.

I wouldn't use the word unfriendly or introverted, but maybe wary and careful until they know your measure. Booya you have probably earned some good friends.

well, thanks for the honesty. I just don't know, "going for it" with three kids in tow is scarry. Maybe we should move closer to Charlotte? Forbes said that Charlotte is set to bounce back because of it's infastructure etc..WE WILL NOT BE BUYING..no way..any suggestions on small towns outside Charlotte?...guess we will have to give up the Mountains. We actually are not interested in the Asheville area we have been there a few times and it is not us...but the Blowing Rock area seemed to be. I don't think the ppl are introverted but we never spoke to any really, I am staying positive. Just looking for a place to live that my family kind find work. Minnesota? Indiana? WHERE?? Nashville is suppossed to be coming around also...we have friends there..maybe that is a better choice..hmmmm any help thanks..

Like many native to WNC I had to leave home to get work. There just never has been many jobs available and now that industry has been outsourced there is even less. But, when we had our high school reunion it was interesting to me how many have relocated to Greenville, SC; Charlotte, NC; Raleigh, NC and have done well. And it is hard to beat Nashville Tn so hopefully there will be some opportunity for you where you can day trip to Blowing Rock anytime you want.

Even on this board you can find them.... *raises hand*. I had to move to Greenville in March for a job. Can't say I like it either but in this economy, I'm damn lucky to have a job and the fact that my fiance found an awesome one too just made the decision that much easier.

Many people come of these boards saying "only the lazy people can't find jobs in WNC" or "i have special skills that make me awesome and I'm not worried about a job" and just don't get it. Its not your skills or work ethic that are in question, its the fact that there just are NOT openings. So they move here only to fail horribly and lose a lot of money and move away again. I've seen it happen many a time.

So to the OP, we aren't trying to ruin your dream, but don't want to see you fail and have tried to give fair warning. I'd take your question about Charlotte to the Charlotte board too. They can direct you better. I think Charlotte would be a good medium for you because you'd still be close to the mountains and could make day trips, actually afford to live there, and stand a bit better chance of finding a job.
