it would I agree and it would be really hard for a bit but the end result is positive I think. The property anywhere with a canton name has a hard time selling.....even though parts of other towns smell worse than parts of canton. There is no downtown business that do good, no hotels, no restaurants. Cantons downtown should be at least at nice as waynesville......It could be the historic mill town that "back in the day polluted everything" There is documentation that they new the pigeon could not handle the mill from day 1 and its just gotten worse.......closing that mill changes everything about the town for the better in the long run......Those folks all get compensated and money for new ventures or re training. Folks open stores, restaurants etc downtown, money comes in. the river is cleaner....etc etc.......it's positive in the long term....very hard short term.

ummmm you do know that company is owned by the richest man in australia and he is worth 6.1 billion dollars right? and that evergreen it self was purchased for 725 million in 06?? I am pretty sure they could afford some compensation for 1000 workers not to mention the plant has be financially unstable for 20 years. closing it would be smart business too
Uh newbie, where are you from? It can't be WNC. No one in WNC would think that closing the plant is a good thing. Its a necessary evil that employs ALOT of locals. I for one would much rather they were in the US than china. Which is where almost all of our manufacturing jobs have gone to in the last 30 years.
Plus, I'd rather people were working hard and being paid for it than people going to "training" for jobs that don't exist in the area. How many people do you think working at the plant could actually afford to move if the plant closed? Not a lot. So instead of working they would become employed at the local welfare center. By your statement you want canton to be yet another tourism destination. Thats working out real well for asheville............
it is kinda hard to think that any plant closing that employs people being closed is a good thing. regular people have to make a living and as industry after industry is closed and relocated overseas it hurts regular people.
would be nice if true objective regularatory agencies and management working together put some technology to use and did something to make the smell better.

NO ONE?????? really?? first off the pigeon river is being destroyed by it along with communities downstream. Its ruining good fishing water. There are tons of local movements to close the plant, thousands of complaints filed each year etc etc......plenty of people want it closed believe me......The plant employees 1000 people.....yes thats alot but the town now has no income from taxes because who they hell would open anything or go there to shop or do business....the property prices are the bottom of anywhere in the area etc etc...............Plus the whole area is already a tourist destination

that plant cannot operate cleanly on that river.......its just not possible.........the plant is more negative than positive for the town
