Any suggestions for a good place that is not a chain? Seems most places we have tried have food that is on the bland side. We like some kick to our Mexican dishes. Have traveled a lot in the southwest so may just be spoiled and hard to please. Thanks!
Which city in western North Carolina are you seeking a good Mexican restaurant?
In Polk County, I would recommend El Campesino, located at 205 East Mills Street, Columbus, North Carolina 28722-8745; and El Sureño, located at 1052 South Trade Street, Tryon, North Carolina 28782-3722. Both restaurants have great dishes with good portions at reasonable prices. I would highly advise not going to Cocula Mexian Grill, located at 338 West Mills Street, Columbus, North Carolina 28722-8404. Over several visits, the restaurant was consistently unclean, meals were priced high with small portions lacking good taste, and the service could have been better.
We have eaten in a few on that list: Bandidos, El Que Pasa, Mamcitas, & Tacos Jalisco.
All of the three are OK to good; none are really like any corner joint one can find in the 'SW', let alone really good joints in the SW, imo. I would give a slight nod to Tacos Jalisco...

We actually order a variety of Salsa from a family owned company in Albuquerque because we are so hooked on the southwest chile and flavors. mD will take your suggestion, have found your advice is usually good! Opt-Out Salsas is one of the better ones. But we're still looking.......

We're partial to El Pinto - also from ABQ. There's been a reserved spot in the fridge for the Salsa Twins for a long time.
Good luck with your search. Sounds like my kind of hobby.
