You may not see 90 at 3000 feet but at 3200 out of Weaverville in upper 80's with matching humidity can be rough. But nights tend to cool off and today mid 80's and gorgeous! Snow is not a big issue especially if retired and can wait because it melts fast but so lovely when we get it. Beautiful area you will probably like it in WNC.

The thing to remember about snow in western NC is that with near-freezing temps, snow on the road is a lot slipperier than it would be in much colder temps. Shade on the road, say, the north side of a mountain or with trees shielding the road from direct sunlight and a merely wet road can change to two inches of slush in the space of a few yards.

Kaleman is right on that point and because of the lack of frequent big snows not as much snow removal equipment. There is a shady curve on our road that gets slicker and stays longer than the rest. Coming from Vermont I would guess you are familar with winter mountain travel unlike the Florida folks who sometimes over winter here and are terrified. But all in all really not too bad.
