Although I was not researching flights from FL, I also have noticed that flights into Greenville are much more affordable.

Also check Charlotte. Often a direct flight into Charlotte is the cheapest option and the 2 hour drive to Asheville is frequently faster than a connecting flight int AVL or GSP.
