I used to own a home 7 miles outside of Black Mountain on the Rocky Broad river. We'd spend weekends and holidays up there and venture into town occasionally. Its a cool small town with enough restaurants/bars/shopping to keep things interesting.
Asheville is bigger with way more people and lots of tourists. I am not saying that is a bad thing as I enjoy Asheville, I just would not want to live there especially with the high cost of housing. Black Mountain, Candler, or Weaverville would do just fine and you could go into Asheville when needed.
If you were looking for a gated community in the area, there aren't too many because they are not needed. Take Carriage Park in Hendersonville and High Vista in Mills River e.g. Beautiful developments, views, gated and 'guarded', high prices. You can walk right in off the street/highway. I don't believe there are any in Black Mountain, it's pretty laid back. Asheville though is a horse of a different color though.

No, actually, we weren't looking for a gated community. Guess I was expecting a smaller version of Hendersonville, which it did not appear to be. We all have places that appeal to us, and from what we saw (and expected), Black Mountain didn't do it for us. I'm sure my friends marvelous stories of growing up there biased our expectations. Perhaps, we need to revisit.

It IS smaller than Hendersonville, the town is charming. Try lunch at one of the outdoor cafes.
Based on these comments, maybe we didn't miss anything. Looks like we may have seen everything there was to see. Guess I was expecting too much..
Did you actually go to downtown BM? It's similar to downtown Hendersonville. It's more on a grid than HVL but it does have some nice places to eat, shops, cafes, bars and more. HVL is bigger in general but they both have a nice downtown.

Yes, we did see downtown, but we may have missed something, so need to revisit.
Black Mountain is still sort of rural especially right outside of town, and that's a good thing. The landscape around it is some of the best in WNC. The town however does boast at least 1 of everything you would needs sans a Walmart (which is another good thing). Town Hardware is an amazing store with almost any and everything you might need from a hardware store. There are 2 grocery stores, a Fred's and some Dollar Generals, and a couple of drug stores.
Again enough bars/restaurants, and small shops to keep things interesting. A Mast general store would be good to have but they already have locations in Hendersonville and Asheville. However an Orvis store would be a great get if they could make it happen.
You really don't need anymore than that, you just think you do because the current town you live in has much more.
There is also the area around Tomahawk Lake and the golf club. Pretty cool surroundings.
