There were 8 (or 9) earthquakes outside of Canton in June. I was there for the first one, the second one happened later in the day of the day we left. We had friends over and there was a rattling going on from the sideboard that wasn't much different from when the washing machine in on spin and a bit off balance. I think that one was a 2.6. We had a house up there for 3 years and there was one earthquake during the middle of the night that didn't even wake me up. A neighbor sent me the link about it.

Mudslides do happen, but usually only after heavy rains. They really aren't that common.

If you are building or buying, this is something you would want to check out.
This is really good information to think about, if you go into a community which has steep elements. Once you've identified a parcel, look it up using the county's website, below.

After putting in the street name, use the "map layers" function on the upper right of the webpage and click the "debris flow pathways" and "stability index" and you're ready to go! Many properties may have unstable portions of the parcel but the outline of the existing structure will be shown vis-a-vis the analysis of the parcel.

There's lots of interesting information on this site!

Looking at cabin listings in Maggie valley I encountered one that disclosed remediation from a rock slide. So it looks like it does happen. I wonder if other counties have maps like Buncombe.

Could have just been a slope cut in too steep but best to call a geologist.

Yes, there are maps for other counties. When we bought a lot in Henderson county, I remember looking at the map showing land stability.
