Have you experienced earthquakes in WNC? Are they somewhat common? Is land shifting a concern? Have you heard about homes damaged by landslides?
I can only speak to the areas around Asheville and west to southwest of Asheville. We absolutely have earthquakes here. I wouldn’t say they are extremely common, but they do happen from time to time. Typically, are usually not strong enough to do much damage. We also have unstable land in places. There is a state agency which has maps that show unstable areas. If you are building or buying, this is something you would want to check out.
Thank you Lizap. We're really hoping to move there next year. Trying to research and get as informed as possible going into this house hunting adventure...

I wouldn’t let either of these detract you from moving here. WNC really is a slice of paradise.
Earthquakes do happen, they tend to be low on the scales that measure them. More commonly harsh rains wash out areas and roads from time to time. There can be severe flooding time to time. That is more likely to happen than a major earthquake in the area, but we don't always know what the future holds.
Here is a recent story from Asheville's WLOS about a road being washed out and a truck was suspended between the cracks of the split open road just a week or so ago. This was in Rutherford County, southeast of Asheville area.
I live in yancey co and I buddy I built homes with over the years seemed to be more tuned in to the low frequency feeling an earthquake can produce and he has felt/heard 3 near us . Our county has had 3 quivers 2.8 or less and deep in the earth in the last 25 years none larger than 2.8 and 2 were with in 2 miles from where we live and no one around us noticed them except my buddy ! Land sides damage ?? Nope .

You'll be fine. Landslides and earthquakes aren't on anyone's radar to worry about in NC, eastern or western. I would be more worried about flash flooding in the mountains than probably anything else, just look at where the water may be in relation to any property you find and check out flood zone mapping.
