You assume that to be the case but CLT (including Concord) has all the low cost carriers and they haven't created very competitive rates on really any fares to any locations. Allegiant, Spirit and Frontier earn their reputations as being budget and main carriers aren't competing head to head against them.

Currently the average round-trip flight between Asheville and either of the immediate DC airports is around $400-$450 round-trip. None of the discount airlines fly that route currently while United, American and Delta combine for in excess of 40 flights per day minus connecting service with budget carriers. Similarly the Asheville to NYC route features the same legacy carriers plus the competition of Allegiant, Spirit and Jet Blue via connecting service only. The average fare on the route is below $300, with about 60 flight options per day among the three NYC airports. The impact even through connecting service only is sizable.
